Work is an important part of life. Therefore, it has a strong impact on an individual. Work ensures people’s livelihood, help them realize their tendencies, satisfy their needs, to affirm themselves with regards to their creative and productive abilities.
Work motivation is greatly responsible for every individual’s prosperity. Work performance depends on the level of motivation. Motivation directed towards an action can bring excellent results and a work effect even though employee’s skills are not very developed. A lack of motivation for doing something can make indifferent even the most capable people, which will automatically reflect a bad work performance.
Motivation provides human activity with direction and intensity as opposed to the needs which emerge as a result of an integral perception of the world. Therefore, motives which affect a person in a work environment and simulate certain reactions are multiple. They also affect the coherency within a working group. In order for the employees’ potencies and abilities to gain strength when doing a job, there must be a motivation for the successful completion of a task.
A person spends a great part of their lives in a working environment, therefore, the working environment affects encouraging certain motives. A working environment can define the activity a person will undertake. For example, if a person is pleased with the job he/she does, if the work motivation is present, a person can feel affirmed and self-respect. If discontent appears and there is no work motivation fails, frustration and unwillingness may appear as well as losing interest for work.
Economic motivations are very important for work because an individual connects not only with his/her work group but with the society as well. Economic stimulation methods or providing the motive for a higher income are well-known. If an employee is not financially motivated, he may show an indifferent attitude towards work, for example, the decision-making process.
It should be noted that even though the financial motive is provided, it doesn’t mean that other motives, such as people’s desires or motives in accordance to the system a society projects, are provided as well. Another person will find it to be equally important to have a say in the decision-making process. It concerns different motivational structures which may cause a group to be incoherent, incompatible, and inefficient in business. Adjusting motives within a workgroup leads to a cohesion which represents a way towards work productivity.
For all these reasons, countless studies were conducted to come to an answer regarding what can make someone invest all their effort into something. Besides financial motivation, it has been shown that work motivation can result from respecting the employees and accepting their individuality by the superiors. If a person is treated fairly and does not fear the superiors or any other member of the group, this feeling can increase work motivation.
The next motive refers to the possibility of achieving personal success through work. It is reflected in personal affirmation, value as well as the prosperity in one’s career. Besides, acknowledging good work increases a person’s dignity, authority, and vitality.
A work environment that provides an opportunity to express initiative can result in great pleasure and work motivation. It refers to creative work which is required of many employees because they can bring something personal, original, new, and individual into such work. That provides a strong motivation for putting more effort into work.
Work motivation is also accomplished with a pleasant work environment. Both physical and psychological components affect a work environment. When it comes to manual labor, motivation will be increased by providing adequate climate conditions, a pleasant atmosphere, safety at work etc. From a psychological point of view, it is important that work is done in a group with solid social relationships. It helps achieve efficiency and productivity in work. Employee’s working abilities initiate and work motivation can be increased if a person feels he/she is treated fairly.
Work accomplishment is affected by many motives which are mutually related and vary from one individual to another. Whenever there is a possibility or expectancy to experience something good, it can turn into motivation for performing the activity which would lead to that source of satisfaction. A successfully completed activity can bring the feeling of pleasure regardless of the issues and obstacles that had to be resolved in order to realize it.
When Work Motivation Has Different Characteristics
People with aggressive attitude in a business environment who demonstrate their aggressive behavior have are motivated by different things. The reasons for such a different motivation within such employees are the imbalance and emotional conflicts within their personalities as a result of psychological disorders or neurotic manifestations which can lead to discordance. All that affects one’s attitude towards work. The two most common motives are the motive to present oneself as something they are not through work, and a motive to escape unresolved personal issues.
When it comes to the need to present oneself like something they are not, those are usually people who wish to appear diligent and interested for work but in reality, due to incapacity for work they fail to demonstrate resourcefulness so they address work disinterested. Actually, it refers to people who are indisposed by something and who transfer those feelings to work. That is why their work performance is always behind compared to the potency, time, energy and effort they invested which leads t thinking their work is not acceptable. Their attitudes vary as well because they are under the impression that their colleagues ought to give them perks and acknowledge their alleged efforts as well as spare them from the responsibility for the work they perform. Such individuals may also present themselves as victims because of their alleged conscientiousness. In reality, they want to force the work environment to treat them gratification and with as many incentives as possible. On the other hand, the workgroup is appalled by their incompetence for work, their shallow and loud speech, boasting, and harming the work. What these people really show is incompetence for work because it is too hard for them and so such people are not suited for taking any responsibility and organized work.
When it comes to escaping the unresolved issues, dissatisfaction with one’s life or past embarrassments, we can come across people who are meticulous, working overtime and investing all their physical and mental capacities, emotionality and temper. Such motive for endurance which leaves minimal time for relaxing and loved ones can be typical of a person who seeks a way out of their personal incapacities, inability to experience content or not being able to resolve a personal issue, by working constantly, regardless whether it’s a regular job or other personal or work duties. For example, sexual frustration, love life frustration or a family issue can be compensated by hard work. Unfortunately, work often involves amoral characteristics within such people and economic motivation becomes a primary factor.
